Laser-guided welding: BELAZ enhances production automation with digital solutions

News

The latest Robotic Welding Complex (RWC) for welding the frames of BELAZ mining dump trucks of 220–240 tons payload capacity, equipped with laser sensors for monitoring the welds, has been put into operation. A project of this scale and technological complexity has been implemented in the company’s welding production for the first time and has no analogues in Belarus.

This Complex will significantly increase this section productivity and improve the quality of frame welding, which is always subject to higher standards demand. The total service life of a dump truck, as well as the safety of its operation in mine, directly depends on the strength of this critical load bearing system.

The new Robotic Complex is based on an intelligent engineering ecosystem that enables automatic welding at optimal speed and with high precision:

– four robotic manipulators mounted on movable columns, which are capable of moving along rail guides over a distance of up to 30 m, processing oversized 18 ton frames with maximum dimensions of 10.5 by 3.5 m with pinpoint accuracy;

– two technological position mechanisms for fixing and rotating the welded structure;

– four units of modern welding equipment;

– laser sensors that monitor the position of welds in real time.

Robotics fully takes over the most difficult and monotonous processes, improving working conditions for employees and reducing the labor intensity of operations. For example, previously, welding such a large and complex metal structure as a frame was carried out simultaneously by 3 welders. With the introduction of RWC, the overall labor intensity of the work has decreased, significantly reducing costs.

The modernization of the welding production facility is part of the company's investment program aimed at automating production processes. Currently, more than 40% of welds at BELAZ are produced by robots. Thirty-four Robotic Welding Complexes (RWCs) have been integrated into the production process, comprising 51 robots, 49 of which are welding robots. Laser welding technology for cab components has been mastered and implemented. The RWC also weld rear axle housings, front axle beams, side members, frame cross-members, and other critical components for dump trucks with payload capacities ranging from 30 to 360 tons.

Investments in the automation and robotization of key production stages create a reliable technological foundation for the production of high quality BELAZ mining equipment, strengthening the company’s competitiveness in the global market.
