BELAZ continues to implement innovative technologies and equipment to improve production efficiency. Equipping the plant’s large assembly line with automated systems for storing, accounting, and selecting components is another step in this strategically important area of the company’s development.

Professional solutions for warehouse automation and parts flow management have been implemented in the vehicle and dump truck assembly and testing shop, which has recently opened following a major modernization. Conventional racks and containers have been replaced by four innovative high-rise component storage systems.

“Automated vertical storage systems using elevators have been installed in the workshop - this is a new technological solution for us which we intend to replicate in other divisions of our company,” emphasized Sergei Lesin, BELAZ General Director. Working conditions here have been significantly improved which will impact both the quality of work performed and the efficient use of production space.”

Automated storage systems for components solve a range of problems and offer a number of clear advantages over traditional racking systems: process automation, increased productivity and cost reduction, space savings and efficient use of warehouse space, ergonomics and a high level of safety.

How the new system works: 25 supporting shelves of automated storage systems in each of 8.6-meter-tall elevator module store small and medium-sized parts, such as hardware, bushings, brackets and other machine components with a maximum load of up to 800 kg per shelf. The computerized storage system with an elevator-based lifting mechanism operates on the “parts-to-person” principle. This means that when using the smart system, a picker doesn’t have to move around the warehouse to select parts; instead, shelves containing the required items are automatically delivered to the work window upon request to form an assembly kit.

Today, automated component storage systems are among the most important elements of a complete production chain for the conveyor assembly of BELAZ ultra-heavy-duty dump trucks with a payload capacity of 130 MT to 240 MT.
