A new software-controlled technological complex for applying a wear-resistant coating to cutters, milling cutters, drills, taps, and other in-house tools is being integrated into production as part of an investment project to modernize BELAZ's workshops.
According to Andrey Kovalev, Deputy General Director - Technical Director of BELAZ, the implementation of the new line will significantly reduce the need for imported materials and strengthen the company's toolmaking capabilities. In machine-building industry, where accuracy is measured in microns, the quality of the cutting elements determines the reliability of the finished mining equipment as a whole. That is why special importance is attached to increasing their resource.
Hardening coatings are applied both to tools made of high speed steel, increasing wear resistance by up to 70%, and to carbide tools, significantly extending their service life during ultra high speed machining. Titanium, molybdenum, zirconium, and their compounds can be used as materials for applying ten different types of coatings using the vacuum plasma method.
The new complex is based on a high tech vacuum plasma unit for applying a hardening coating. The line also includes special equipment and separate rooms for the preliminary preparation of tools — a laboratory for removing the old coating, a tumbling machine, a shot blasting device, ultrasonic baths for washing and rinsing tools, and a drying furnace.
BELAZ, by modernizing its production and introducing new equipment and technologies, is implementing a policy aimed at improving product quality. As a result, it is producing even more reliable and efficient mining equipment.
