Robots will do the painting: BELAZ Upgrades Painting Line for Mining Equipment Components

The modern, high tech robotic paint coating complex for parts and components of BELAZ dump trucks and special equipment will occupy an area of about 7,000 square meters. The line’s design capacity, operating in two shifts, will be up to 11,000 units per year.

Here, the largest components of heavy-duty mining dump trucks will be painted, including parts weighing up to 21 tons and measuring 11 meters in length. These include frames, body, rear axle casings, front axle beams, motor-wheel reduction gear, steering knuckle with hub, and others.

As Andrey Kovalev, Deputy General Director - Technical Director of BELAZ, noted, investments in the modernization and automation of the painting process will improve the product's consumer characteristics and working conditions, as well as increase the productivity of the painting process.

Switching to two-component coating materials will ensure superior corrosion protection for BELAZ components and an enhanced aesthetic finish compared to the previous single-component paints. The service life of the coating is at least 5 years under various operating conditions for BELAZ mining equipment — from tropical to arctic climates — and meets the level of the best global analogues.

A new painting complex—featuring automated part delivery, pre-painting surface preparation, multi-layer coating application, centralized paint supply to the line, and emission purification—is being constructed in the vehicle and truck assembly and testing workshop. This facility assembles BELAZ trucks—with payload capacities ranging from 110 to 240 tonnes—that are most popular among miners.

Twelve robots will play the lead roles: four will handle surface preparation via shot blasting, while the other eight will perform the actual application of primer and paint, thereby eliminating the human factor's impact on coating quality. Floor-based and overhead transport systems with carefully planned logistics will move the parts, minimizing manual labor. The cycle time for one traverse with a painted product will be 30 minutes.

The complex will meet all modern requirements: from the quality of surface preparation, priming, and application of the finishing coating to strict industrial, sanitary, and environmental standards. Special attention is paid to air purification systems using zeolite rotary units, as well as the regeneration of spent solvents and wastewater.

Currently, construction and installation work and the installation of the necessary equipment are actively underway at Vehicle and Truck Assembly and Testing workshop. The commissioning of the painting line is scheduled for early 2027. The implementation of this high tech complex is an important stage in the large scale program of technical re equipment of BELAZ workshops, aimed at improving the main production of mining equipment.
